Melting Point of Different Plastics

For my lab, I will be testing the melting points of different plastics.
My Independent Variable will be the different plastics
My Dependent Variable will be the melting point of different plastics
My Control Variable will be the amount of plastic I will be putting into the oven to melt.

To determine the melting point, I have to be observing the plastic for the whole time while it is being heated. I have to be observing very closely because, to determine the melting point I have to see when the plastic starts to melt and when it is completely melted (1). I will be using two plastics two compare each other, I will use Polyethylene terephthalate which is the most produced plastic in the world and Polyethylene, these two plastics are the most common plastics (2). I will be comparing the melting point of each of the plastics and finding out what plastic is more resistant to heat. Polyethylene terephthalate is thermoplastic which means that it reacts to heat in a certain way. The melting point of Polyethylene terephthalate is roughly 260 degrees Celsius (2). Because polyethylene terephthalate is thermoplastic, when melted it turns into a liquid substance and doesn't just burn up. I think that this plastic will therefore be more resistant to heat because it doesn't burn and disintegrate but it turns into a liquid instead (2).

Isomerization

Research: What are structural Isomers? Online definition:  In chemistry isomerization is the process by which one molecule is transformed into another molecule which has exactly the same atoms, but the atoms have a different arrangement My definition: When the arrangement of a molecule is changed but still has all of the same atoms. (Alkanes) Examples : - Methane - Ethane - Propane  - Butane VIDEO: Constitutional Isomers : Isomers that differ in connectivity Simple hydrocarbons such as; methane, ethane, and propane can not have constitutional isomers because there is no other way to connect them.   There are 2 different butanes that re constitutional isomers. What are covalent bonds and why are they important

Covalent bonds A covalent bond also known as molecular bound is when two nonmetals share electrons. The bonding starts forms when the electrostatic attraction of their nuclei are aiming for the same electrons. Atoms will share electrons with other atoms to be stable,  stability is gained by filling their electron shell, and each shell except for the first one needs 8 electrons to have a full shell. For example, Co2, carbon bonds covalently with 2 oxygen to have a full outer shell, oxygen needs 2 electrons to have a full outer shell and carbon, and carbon needs 4 more electrons for a full outer shell, so its going to bond with the oxygen and both elements will be stable. Due to the sharing of electrons, they show physical properties  that include lower melting points and lower  electrical conductivity  compared to ionic compounds .  There are two ...

Displacement reaction

A chemical reaction is when one or more substances which are reactants are changes into one or more different substances which then becomes the product.  A chemical reaction is written with the formula of reactants on the left side, and formula of the products formed on the right. An arrow is placed in-between the reactants and the products. They are 5 types of chemical reaction; Synthesis reaction/combination Decomposition Reaction Displacement or Replacement Reaction Acid Base Reactions Combustion Reaction I'll be explaining one of these five reaction which will be  Single displacement reaction .  Single displacement reaction is part of the reaction "Displacement or Replacement Reaction. Single displacement reaction happen when a cation(positive) and an anion(negative) swap from a compound.  The general formula for a  single replacement reaction  is A + B-C → B + A-C where  A  is an element and where  B-C  is a c...
